Resident Chroma Origins

“Color becomes contemporary as it moves away from indexicality, symbolism, codification, and ideation because this move away from signification allows color to register traces of a much more complex series of historically specific conditions and forces: those of technology, sensibility, capital, taste, materiality, manufacture. In other words, when working through the field of effects, color can do more to engage contemporaneity than when it works through the structures of meaning.”
Sylvia Lavin “What Color is it Now? 2004”

Sylvia Lavin “当今的颜色是什么?”,2004

“Color can be used in different ways: thin or thick, one-dimensional or layered. The thicker the color and the more layers the greater the variety of impressions and effects.”
Liisa Aholainen & Bas Gremmen “The Thickness of Color”, 2009

As a tool color has been practiced directly by artists and designers in order to develop their own styles. In architecture color is an important means of expression.

zebra’s tattoo patterns
The color of zebra’s tattoo patterns disrupt its volumetric surface, but also encase and delineate. Marking a change in direction at the juncture delicately change scale to conform to the narrowness of leg.

Left to right: Hand-carved by a Maori craftsman, depicts traditional facial tattoos;Papua facial ornamentation;Chinese opera facial masks ornamentation.

The Papua facial treatments, the craftsman’s tattoos and the Chinese opera facial masks work with the accentuating enhancement of facial features. Both sets of enhancements serve as mediums of distinction. In the case of the craftsman’s tattoos, there exists an elaborate system of typical characters. All of the surfaces are topological diagrams, an expression of organic structure. Color both conforms and transforms, sometimes it transforms by conforming.

Chiaroscuro describes an invention in the art of painting to create the illusion of volumes in space. The gradation effected from the light to the shadowed side of a three dimensional object. For example in the Clarinet Player, by Picasso, a pyramidal form implies an image. The pyramid has a strong contour to give the sense the figure is standing in a deep space. The Portuguese, by Braque, uses a highly developed interlacing of horizontal and vertical gridding created by gapped lines and intruding planes that create shallow spaces. Only gradually is the observer able to invest this space with depth permitting the figure to assume substance.

The base material before painted it matters, the material quality itself is important. Painting the materials is also changing the material properties as well as painting.

Today materials are scientifically engineered to serve demanding purposes in a profit and performance oriented world. The expertise of manufacturers grows rapidly to maximize efficiency and push material limits.

The consequence is an illusion of humans mastering nature.

The gap between human perception and physical behavior is an enormous issue today. We rely on artificial intelligence executing codes with high precision in a physical environment. Materials with specific properties become problem solvers rather than intelligent variables in fabrication.

Our project suggests a new interface to bridge the gap between technique and technology, design and application, most importantly virtual and real. A global color control model builds up the three dimensional data base. This is able to merge multiple parameters breaking out of the singularity of conventional information mappings.

Color as input/output display becomes an analysis tool which redefines RGB as a calculator opening up color being a generator. Simple procedures are merged by color mapping to create new conditions without losing information. In short, blue and red generate purple. We are building up a toolkit of materials with a great variety of attributes, such as the shaping capacities of plastics, the tension resistance of fabrics, flex-abilities of fibers, and structural properties of concrete – giving the user control by a constant sensor feedback loop by infrared cameras, laser measuring, conductive yarn and pressure sensors. As a consequence we are breaking out of applications being limited to materials and architectural functions being reduced to object.

Material intelligence is redefined as a design tool in a playful environment – displayed and combined in the color control model “Resident Chroma”.

Consistent with the Obama government's national transit and new technology initiatives, the main focus of our studio is finding the urban strategy considering infrastructure by scripting an parametric design with sustainable building technologies. We started with branching script and voronoi algorithm based on the main stream of the people coming to the bus station. We obtained our main design pattern implying people's flow from this main path. Based on the ALGAEtech works with direct sunlight, we applied them into our roof system and building façade so the result was the best synergy effect in both visual and technical terms. Harvesting algae for biofuels enhances transportation fuel production while mitigating CO2, clean the air around the bus station area.

Our site has a level difference about 24meters, so we tried to divide the terminal with the local bus bay area and greyhound terminal. The 1st floor is used for loading space for public from taxi and parking space for the bikes, 2nd floor is bay area for local buses and 3rd floor is for the greyhound bus. The local bus can enter into terminal from Beale Street and it can go through 2nd floor and exit through Harrison Street. Greyhound bus comes from highway and goes directly into the greyhound terminal at third floor and it exits out to the Beale Street through the connective ramp. For structural solution, we designed the star shape structure by dividing steel pipes and assembling the segments again inversely. And this way, the star structure allowed algae tubes to be combined and fixed well into the main structure.

Global warming, depletion of non-renewable resources and intensifying crisis and wars over fuel, are an instigator for finding new forms of sustainable energy. Algae is the most efficient way (30times more energy per acre than other second- generation biofuel crops) to manufacture biofuel. There are a variety of ways to transform algae into oil. One of these systems uses algae tubes as atmospheric potentials for an architectural façade. So far, this technology has not been used in a building system. In our bus station project, ALGAEtech recycles carbon dioxide from the bus engines to produce biofuels, hydrogen and oxygen. This reduces net carbon dioxide production as waste becomes profit.

ADVANCED TECTONICS: A . K . A The ‘Beam Class’

Using scripted geometry as a starting point we initially wanted to create a beam in tension and use a chemical fixant so that when inverted, the beam could act against compression. Failed prototypes using resin led to a process of aggregation, where the testing of models led to an additive process. Much like a spider spins its web, we added members where weaknesses could be physically felt in the model. Both physical and three-dimensional proto-types were evolved in tandem to produce a lattice like beam, which under a point load would overcome shear, compressive and tensile forces. Using photographs as an analytical device, we could monitor the changes and the pattern in which the members would act. We devised a series of members throughout each preliminary model – primary and secondary (thick and thin steel members), in some cases tertiary (steel plate) cataloguing the use of each in terms of economy, scale and structural performance. This created a highly ordered arrangement albeit with the same random aesthetic as the initial scripted studies.

Throughout the design process we were conscious that the beam should although be highly functional – have an undercurrent of form as a driver. We became interested in the way highly articulated spans, angled members for example, and clusters of smaller ones could give the beam a sense of movement and contradictingthe notion that a beam should be something structurally massive and largely unseen.

No cultural practice is more indebted to a technical apparatus than architecture to geometry of representation. Software technology has affected design in a considerable way. Its geometric implications and process consistency has yield the way of a new set of parameters for design. Therefore it is important to acknowledge the relevance of the development and evolution of the different phases of the design process within this new set of techniques. Delineation and Dynamic systems is critical learning process of techniques that can produce a different way of thinking.

The works critically participate on the current debate about the state of technology for the production of architecture, and question the ideological and formal implications of various digital representational modes. Besides having a tied agenda in terms of its assignments, one of the ultimate aspirations of this is to become a dynamic testing ground for the emergence of new ideas and techniques that could be actively brought and actualized into the design projects.

We used as a point of departure for our investigation the search for interlocking forms and cellular aggregations. The task chosen for my team was the invention of an original geometrical mutation interlocking system and the understanding of this system in architectural terms (modules, panels, cladding…etc). We handled an integrated digital process of design and fabrication: we designed, modeled, represent, animated, and fabricated their interlocking system transitioning from digital description to physical manufacturing.

Base on our case study researched, we want to argue if it is possible to make a courtyard space into the Mobuis loop, is it interesting? How to catch the people’s body movement though one day life with the loop? Also, we are really interested in designing the linear against with the shell, make them very differently, make the poche not become a dark space, but also a interesting space. We choose Chinese architect as our client type. The courtyard becomes really important in our project is not only it is for a Chinese, but also we want to compare with Mobuis house and find the difference of the relationship between the project and the environment. Mobuis house is more about dealing with the landscape and the forest around itself. We want to bring the nature inside of the house. The building’s circulation is a loop way but also have separate working and living zone. Follow the continuity movement there are always have the break space that is similar as the bay window but give the new function for the house. The linear stretches out through the shell. Where is an aperture the linear go out. The linear totally different from the shell. When the linear and shell meets in the aperture, the linear go its own way and thickness out of the shell and disapp-ear in the another direction to meet the shell. Here can put the light to change the inside environment.
